Urology

Greetings

The organs that the urologist is responsible for are the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra, which are the urinary tract, and the prostate and testicles, which are the male reproductive organs, and we provide medical treatment for diseases of these organs.

  1. Difficulty urinating (dysuria)
  2. Inability to hold back urine (difficulty collecting urine)
  3. Blood in the urine (hematuria)
  4. Pain when urinating (dysuria)

These are the main symptoms. There are various underlying causes, including aging, inflammation, stones, and cancer. In addition to urine tests and ultrasound examinations, we also perform blood tests, X-rays, and endoscopic examinations depending on the situation to diagnose and treat. If surgery is required, hospitalization will be required. We mainly perform surgery to remove malignant tumors and endoscopic surgery for urinary stones.

Characteristics (main treatments, medical equipment, pioneering initiatives, etc.)

The number of annual deaths from urological malignancies, such as prostate cancer, kidney cancer, and bladder cancer, is on the rise. The rate of increase in prostate cancer is particularly notable, making early diagnosis and treatment an urgent priority. Therefore, we are proactively implementing screening using the tumor marker PSA and prostate needle biopsies. Furthermore, in June 2013, our department began offering robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy using a surgical support robot (Da Vinci).

For prostate cancer removal surgery, we aim to perform minimally invasive surgery using an endoscope, leaving as small an incision as possible, minimizing pain and shortening hospital stays.

For kidney cancer, we actively perform partial nephrectomy with the aim of preserving kidney function. As of April 2016, robot-assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomy using a surgical support robot (Da Vinci) for early-stage kidney cancer has been covered by health insurance, and we are actively performing this procedure at our hospital.

For urinary stones, we are equipped with an extracorporeal shock wave lithotriptor and a holmium laser device and perform minimally invasive surgery, so we no longer treat urinary stones through open surgery that requires a scalpel to be inserted into the body.

The Urology and Nephrology departments have formed a nephrology and urology team, which works together to provide medical care related to kidney failure (such as the introduction of peritoneal dialysis and living donor kidney transplants).

We also diagnose and treat other diseases such as adrenal tumors, urogenital infections, male infertility, and sexual dysfunction.

With the advent of an aging society, the number of patients with urinary problems such as difficulty urinating and urinary incontinence is increasing. Ensuring comfortable excretion and urination is fundamental to daily life, and the Department of Urology can support this.

Second Opinion

We are available to provide consultation to patients who are currently undergoing examinations and treatment at another urology medical institution, but would like a second opinion or advice from a second urologist regarding future treatment plans.
If you wish, please make an appointment for a second opinion at Kitano Hospital through your current medical institution.
