Epilepsy is a disease in which nerve cells in the cerebrum suddenly exhibit abnormal electrical activity. The symptoms of seizures vary depending on the area of the brain where the abnormal electrical activity occurs. In addition to what is commonly known as "convulsions" or "seizures," symptoms such as "staring blankly," "body twitching," and "moving around while unconscious" can also occur in epilepsy. It is said that there are approximately 1 million patients in Japan, so it is by no means a rare disease. Furthermore, it does not only develop in childhood, but can occur at any age, and in recent years, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of people who develop it in their early old age. It is important to make a correct diagnosis through detailed medical history taking, electroencephalography (EEG), and imaging tests, and to select the appropriate medication. Our department invites Professor Riki Matsumoto and Dr. Masahiro Goto from the Department of Clinical Neurology, Kyoto University, to Osaka to provide specialized epilepsy treatment every Friday afternoon. Recently, several new antiepileptic drugs with fewer side effects have been approved, expanding the treatment options. If medication alone is insufficient to control seizures, we will refer you to a specialized facility that provides surgical treatment for epilepsy.
