Epilepsy is a disease in which nerve cells in the cerebrum suddenly produce abnormal electrical activity, and the symptoms of seizures that appear vary depending on the location of the brain where the abnormal electrical activity occurs. In addition to the so-called "convulsions and spasms," symptoms such as "feeling dazed," "body twitching," and "moving around while unconscious" may also be caused by epilepsy. The number of patients in Japan is approximately100It is said to affect millions of people, so it is not a rare disease. Furthermore, the disease does not only occur in childhood, but can develop at any age, and in particular, there has been a recent trend of an increase in cases of the disease occurring in middle age. Treatment is primarily drug therapy, but recently, several new antiepileptic drugs with fewer side effects have become available, expanding the treatment options. When drug therapy fails to control the seizures and epilepsy surgery is appropriate, we will refer the patient to a specialized facility.
