Departments
Our hospital is certified as a training facility for pediatric hematology and oncology specialists by the Japanese Society of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology. We strive to provide the necessary and optimal treatment for all sick children. We strive to provide prompt diagnosis and treatment in collaboration with other medical departments for a wide range of diseases, from benign diseases such as idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura and hereditary spherocytosis to malignant diseases such as leukemia, malignant lymphoma, brain tumors, and neuroblastoma.
In order to maintain national standards for diagnosis and treatment, we are a member of the Japan Children's Cancer Group (JCCG) and provide accurate diagnoses and appropriate treatment. Hematologic tumors that affect children can be broadly divided into blood disorders and solid tumors, each of which requires specialized diagnosis and treatment. Our department belongs to each of the necessary organizations and works closely with each facility to provide diagnosis and treatment.
Malignant tumors, commonly known as childhood cancers, require prompt treatment, and we provide the following support for the main childhood cancers in Japan: leukemia, brain tumors, neuroblastoma, lymphoma, and kidney tumors.
For pediatric hematological malignancies such as leukemia, malignant lymphoma, Langerhans cell histiocytosis, and transient myeloproliferative malignancies (TAM) in children with Down syndrome, we provide treatment based on national protocols for each disease, while continuing to follow the policies of the Japanese Pediatric Leukemia/Lymphoma Study Group (JPLSG) and the Japanese Association of Childhood Leukemia Study Group (JACLS). For cases requiring unrelated bone marrow transplants or umbilical cord blood transplants, we refer these to the Department of Pediatrics at Kyoto University and other institutions. In addition to the above, we also diagnose and treat hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, congenital thrombocytopenia, hereditary spherocytosis, congenital hemoglobinopathies, Evans syndrome, antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, and autoimmune neutropenia.
We are a member of the Japan Neuroblastoma Study Group (JNBSG) and provide treatment tailored to each risk category. For advanced cases, we offer peripheral blood stem cell collection and autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT). For brain tumors, we collaborate with the Department of Neurosurgery and consult with the Japanese Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium (JPBTC) and Kyoto University to provide aggressive chemotherapy and radiation therapy in combination with PBSCT. For renal tumors, including Wilms tumors, we are a member of the Japan Wilms Tumor Study Group (JWiTS-2) and participate in a nationwide protocol. We also treat various other solid tumors, including hepatoblastoma and rhabdomyosarcoma. If you have any concerns, please feel free to contact us at any time. Our hematology clinic is open on Monday afternoons, but consultations are also available during the general outpatient clinic.
