Departments

Neuropsychiatry

Greetings

Simply put, neuropsychiatry is a medical department that deals with "mental (psychiatric) illnesses and disorders." Although it may be a little confusing, neurosurgery and neurology are responsible for illnesses that affect the nerves or the brain itself. Historically, these three medical departments related to the nerves originally belonged to the same field, neurology.
Incidentally, "mental illness" also has an aspect of being a brain disease. Today, even the typically psychological illnesses known as "neurosis" can be treated to some extent with drugs (drugs that act on the brain).
Conversely, it is now recognized that even "mental illnesses," which were previously thought to be caused by some kind of abnormality in the brain, require a variety of psychological and social treatments, and that these treatments are effective. Therefore, it can be said that the distinction between brain illnesses and mental illnesses is no longer so clear-cut. In the future, psychiatry will likely be integrated into the trends of brain science and neuroscience, but at the same time, its ties with psychology and social behavioral theory are expected to become increasingly deeper.
Our psychiatry department advocates for the rights of people with mental disabilities and aims to be open to as many people as possible. We do not view mental illness as a special condition that only affects people born with a special condition, but as a common illness that anyone can suffer from, and we aim to provide an environment where as many people as possible can receive appropriate treatment with peace of mind.

Characteristics (main treatments, medical equipment, pioneering initiatives, etc.)

In order to fully respond to the role of psychiatry in a general hospital, our neuropsychiatry department is shifting its focus from outpatient care to intervention and treatment for the mental and psychological issues of patients hospitalized with physical illnesses (psychiatric liaison care). As a result, it has become necessary to reduce outpatient care, and we are currently suspending the acceptance of new outpatients. Please note that even if you have a referral letter from another medical institution, you will not be able to see our neuropsychiatry department as a new patient.
