Treatment methods vary depending on whether the damage is limited to the skin and subcutaneous tissue, or whether it also involves damage to muscles, blood vessels, and nerves.
No sutures are required, and treatment is carried out with ointment after thorough cleaning. If sand or other foreign matter remains in the wound, it may cause a traumatic tattoo, which will leave a black scar. Traumatic tattoos can be made less noticeable with a laser.
Damage to the ducts (lacrimal canaliculi) that drain tears into the nasal cavity requires specialized repair treatment. Tears are absorbed through the lacrimal puncta on the eyelid margin near the inner corner of the eye, pass through the lacrimal canaliculi, and accumulate in the lacrimal sac before being drained into the nasal cavity via the nasolacrimal duct. Damage to these pathways impedes the drainage of tears into the nasal cavity, making you more susceptible to overflowing tears (lacrimation), eye discharge, and conjunctivitis.
Treatment involves suturing the ruptured tube and reconstructing it, but if the damage is severe, a silicone tube is inserted to prevent adhesion or narrowing of the tube.
If there is no such tissue damage, the injury will be sutured with great care to ensure a clean healing. If the tissue loss due to the injury is extensive, reconstruction with a skin flap will be necessary.
