It is a malformation of the lymphatic vessels that has been transformed into a sac-like shape (cyst), and accumulates lymphatic fluid inside, causing it to swell significantly. It is often found on the neck or under the armpits, but it can appear anywhere on the body. It can be a large cyst, or a cluster of small cysts. Treatment will vary depending on the nature of the lymphangioma.

Lymphangioma in the armpit
When lymphatic fluid accumulates, the area swells significantly. Even if it is not usually noticeable, it may swell significantly only when there is internal bleeding or infection. If the lymphangioma is located near a vital organ, it may cause serious symptoms.

Cystic lymphangioma
This is effective for relatively large cystic lymphangiomas. The lymph fluid inside is extracted with a needle and medication is injected. The area will become red and swollen for a while, but will then shrink. This is the most common treatment for lymphangiomas.
Sclerotherapy is ineffective for lymphangioma that consists of a cluster of small cysts. In such cases, the lymphangioma is removed surgically.
Recently, an oral medication called sirolimus has become available. It is effective in shrinking lymphangioma types that are resistant to sclerotherapy. However, it has side effects, so it must be administered with caution.
Some herbal medicines are said to be effective in shrinking lymphangioma, and may be used for children who can tolerate them.
