Diabetic endocrinology

Greetings

The Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology provides a wide range of medical care for diabetes, endocrine disorders such as those of the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, adrenal glands, and gonads, as well as bone metabolic disorders such as osteoporosis.
In the treatment of diabetes, where lifestyle habits have a significant impact on the condition, we propose the best treatment plan based on an accurate understanding of the patient's condition, and we provide team medical care with staff from various professions, aiming for sustainable treatment for each patient.
There are many types of endocrine disorders, ranging from relatively common to extremely rare. Our hospital handles a wide range of these, making full use of specialized testing and collaborating with many specialized departments to provide appropriate treatment.

Characteristics (main treatments, medical equipment, pioneering initiatives, etc.)

  1. Collaborative medical treatment with various specialized departments

Collaboration with various specialized departments is essential for the treatment of diabetes complications. At our hospital, we provide specialized treatment with the cooperation of many departments, including ophthalmology, nephrology, the neurology center, the cardiac center, and dermatology.
In diagnosing endocrine diseases, it may be necessary to carry out catheter tests or examine the tissues of organs related to the disease, and so we work in cooperation with our hospital's radiology department, organ-related surgery department, and pathology department. In addition, when it comes to treatment, we work closely with various surgical departments (neurosurgery, otolaryngology/head and neck surgery, urology, etc.) to provide specialized medical care.

  2. Collaborative medical treatment with local doctors

Diabetes and endocrine disorders often require long-term treatment and convalescence. For example, if abnormal test results are detected during a health checkup, we place importance on collaborating with your regular doctor at each stage, from appropriate detailed testing before symptoms appear, to hospitalization for testing and treatment as needed, to follow-up care. We strive to be of assistance to local doctors who support the long-term medical care of each patient.

  3. Team medical care involving all professions

We support diabetes treatment and convalescence through multidisciplinary team medical care, including doctors, nurses, nutritionists, pharmacists, physical therapists, laboratory technicians, and administrative staff. Each staff member forms a medical team (diabetes support team) that supports diabetes treatment in all departments, and we also focus on cross-hospital initiatives, such as collaborating with the NST (nutrition support team), of which our department's Dr. Honjo (also head of the nutrition department) serves as a committee member, for nutritional guidance.

  4. Basic and clinical research activities

We are actively conducting basic and clinical research in collaboration with a wide range of universities, research facilities, and medical institutions, including Kyoto University. The questions we encounter in our daily clinical practice and our desire for better treatments are the driving force behind our research. These activities have led to outstanding results, such as the publication of new findings on the pathogenesis of endocrine disorders based on molecular biological analysis conducted at our institute.
