Treatment details (ophthalmology)

cataract

Our department was one of the first in Japan to perform intraocular lens implantation during cataract surgery, and currently performs approximately 1,800 cataract surgeries annually (1,400 in 2020). We stock more than 10 types of intraocular lenses, including aspheric intraocular lenses for improved vision in twilight and toric intraocular lenses for reduced astigmatism, and select and use the optimal intraocular lens for each case. Since September 2018, we have been using multifocal intraocular lenses. We also use the latest Centurion cataract surgery equipment, the ORA intraoperative refraction analysis system, and the VERION imaging guide system to minimize intraocular lens power deviation after cataract surgery. We also treat difficult cataracts with fragile Zinn's zona. In addition to standard intraocular lens implantation, we also perform intracapsular lens implantation and intrascleral fixation (a total of 61 cases in 2020).

glaucoma

With cutting-edge diagnostic equipment, highly skilled diagnostic techniques, and a proven track record of treatment, we perform over 100 glaucoma surgeries annually (147 in 2020). We perform a variety of surgical procedures (trabeculotomy, filtration surgery, goniosynechialysis, and various implant procedures) to treat cases ranging from early to late stages. For trabeculotomy, we use a microhook to perform small incisions, aiming for rapid postoperative recovery. We also use other glaucoma surgical devices, such as the stent and Express. In March 2019, we introduced the Barbert tube shunt for refractory glaucoma. For those who do not wish to undergo surgery, we also perform numerous selective laser trabeculoplasties (SLT). We also specialize in diagnosing glaucoma in highly myopic eyes, which are common and difficult to diagnose among Japanese patients.

Vitreoretinal disease (surgical)

With advanced diagnostic techniques and a proven track record of treatment, we performed 298 surgeries in 2020. Diseases we treat include premacular membranes, macular holes, vitreous hemorrhage, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal detachment, with a record of 76 retinal detachment surgeries performed annually (2020). Vitreous surgery is typically performed using a 25G system and a small-incision vitreous surgery system with a wide-angle observation system. However, since March 2019, we have also introduced vitreous surgery incorporating an intraocular endoscope, actively treating refractory proliferative vitreoretinopathy and proliferative diabetic retinopathy in particular. We also treat refractory macular holes with ILM translocation, achieving favorable surgical outcomes.

Retinal and vitreous diseases (medical)

For the diagnosis and treatment of macular diseases, we have opened a macular outpatient clinic in collaboration with the Department of Ophthalmology at Kyoto University, where we provide accurate diagnoses and treatments based on the latest knowledge (anti-VEGF therapy, photodynamic therapy, etc.) to patients with degenerative diseases of the macular and intractable diseases. We also have a uveal outpatient clinic once a month for uveitis, an inflammatory disease, where diagnoses and treatment plans are determined by a uveitis specialist. We also have a low vision care clinic for patients who have become blind, where we help them maintain their social lives.
