Doctor Atsushi Higashio Deputy Chief of Pediatric Surgery
I decided to become a pediatric surgeon after a family member of a patient I treated during my fifth-year medical internship told me, "I wish there was a pediatric surgeon like you." I've always loved children, and meeting a mentor who inspired me to become a role model led me to become a pediatric surgeon. My wife and three children live in a natural environment, surrounded by my parents-in-law and other relatives. While my current environment and family life motivate me, they motivate me to work. I always value speaking from the same perspective. I listen to what children want to do and create an environment where they feel comfortable expressing their opinions. This is true at work as well. In our pediatric surgery department, we primarily perform surgery on children. When parents talk about their children, they worry more than they do about themselves. Therefore, I strive to communicate accurately to ease their anxieties. Our pediatric surgery department, guided by our motto of "never refusing care," sees a diverse range of patients. I will continue to do my best to ensure that as many children and their families as possible receive treatment with peace of mind.
A word from our senior staff!
He gives the impression of being calm and cool when working, but when the topic turns to his own children, his expression changes and you can see how much he dotes on them. I'm always impressed by how he treats the children and their families on the same level, even at the hospital.
