MR-guided focused ultrasound therapy device (MRgFUS)

Essential tremor and Parkinson's disease treatment

We are now introducing MR-guided focused ultrasound therapy as a new treatment for essential tremor and Parkinson's disease. Our hospital has been providing treatment for tremor, Parkinson's disease, writer's cramp, and torticollis dystonia since 1996, when we performed stereotactic pallidotomy, and in 2000, we began deep brain stimulation therapy. With the addition of MR-guided focused ultrasound therapy, our treatment for essential tremor and Parkinson's disease will be even more comprehensive.

This MR-guided focused ultrasound therapy does not involve cutting the skin or skull, nor does it involve implanting any therapeutic devices. It focuses ultrasound waves at a single point in the brain that causes tremors and stiffness, suppressing abnormal nerve activity and easing tremors and stiffness. Because it is not a "cutting" surgery, it is recommended for those who are concerned about the risks of surgery or the implantation of therapeutic devices.

The prevalence of essential tremor ranges from 2.5 to 101 TP3T in the general population, and increases to 5 to 141 TP3T in those aged 65 and over. Side effects of medication, such as heart failure, dizziness, and drowsiness, cannot be adequately treated, and many people have difficulty with daily activities such as eating. The prevalence of Parkinson's disease also increases with age, and with both diseases, it is often determined that surgery is a high risk due to advanced age.

The newly introduced MR-guided focused ultrasound therapy is a safe treatment method that does not require incisions. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the treatment can be assessed and MRI scans can be performed during treatment, dramatically improving both the effectiveness and safety of the treatment. If you are suffering from Parkinson's disease or essential tremor, please feel free to contact us.
