Tazuke Kofukai Public Interest Foundation

Medical Research Fundraising

Medical Research Institute Kitano Hospital is accepting donations from everyone.

Our hospital welcomes donations, regardless of the amount, to improve facilities for research projects and to provide better medical care.

Request for medical research donations

Providing a place for the talented people gathered at the institute to work and utilizing their wisdom in tomorrow's medicine

This is the mission of the Foundation, and for over 90 years since its establishment, it has contributed greatly to the advancement of medicine by returning a wide range of research results to the medical field, and has been working hard to serve the public good.

However, when considering new medicine and new forms of medical care, it is essential to expand research facilities and install the latest equipment, which requires a large amount of funding, and the reality is that it is difficult to secure the necessary funds.

Therefore, in 1985, we were certified as a designated public interest corporation by the then Minister of Education, and we established a medical research fund, soliciting donations from a wide range of corporations and individuals, which we use to invest in equipment and other resources to carry out our research projects.

In October 2011, the Prime Minister once again recognized the public benefit nature of the Foundation's activities, and on November 1st of the same year, the Foundation transitioned from an incorporated foundation to a public interest incorporated foundation, taking a new step forward as a corporation committed to further promoting the public interest. The Foundation has also been certified as a tax-deductible corporation, meaning that donations from individuals can now opt for even more effective tax deductions.

Taking this opportunity to transition to a public interest incorporated foundation, we would like to ask for your support, regardless of the amount, in support of our foundation's aim of further promoting the public interest and contributing to the realization of a vibrant society through medical advances.

Introducing medical research at Kitano Hospital

Eardrum regeneration therapy

The world's first tympanic membrane regeneration therapy, developed at our hospital, became covered by health insurance in November 2019, along with the world's first tympanic membrane regeneration treatment, Retympa®. As a result, minimally invasive regeneration therapy for simple tympanic membrane perforations is now available not only at Kitano Hospital but also at hospitals and clinics across the country. Furthermore, we plan to conduct clinical trials in the United States and Europe to establish this treatment as a global standard of regenerative medicine originating in Japan.

However, the majority of patients have severe tympanic membrane perforations caused by chronic otitis media, etc., and require conventional, highly invasive tympanoplasty. In response to this, we are developing a new, minimally invasive tympanoplasty technique using an endoscope that applies tympanic membrane regeneration therapy, as well as conducting clinical trials of a regenerative therapy for the soft tissue of the external auditory canal connected to the tympanic membrane. Furthermore, tympanic membrane regeneration therapy can regenerate tympanic membrane tissue without the need for cell transplantation by inducing cells from the margins of tympanic membrane perforations. By elucidating the location and dynamics of progenitor cells that serve as the source of tympanic membrane regeneration, we aim to efficiently induce cells and improve the success rate of tympanic membrane regeneration therapy.

Development of tooth regeneration therapeutic agents for congenital edentulism

Congenital tooth loss is considered congenital edentulism, and the rare condition known as ectodermal dysplasia anhidrotic (EDA) has an incidence rate of 15.8 per 100,000 births. Because patients with congenital edentulism experience edentulism during childhood, when the jawbone is still developing, dentures and dental implants are difficult to use. This condition can lead to oral frailty (a decline in oral function for chewing, swallowing, and speaking) during growth, which can adversely affect nutritional intake and growth. Treatment is limited to replacement teeth using dentures or dental implants after adulthood, and there is a strong demand for the development of tooth regeneration therapy as a definitive treatment.
