Special feature: Behind the scenes of testing
June 11, 2025

Why is testing necessary in the first place?

Why is testing at a hospital necessary? In fact, there are three main purposes for testing.

1) Evaluation of current medical condition and treatment effects

To check the effectiveness of medication and rehabilitation, regular blood tests, electrocardiograms, and ultrasounds are performed to accurately capture changes in the patient's condition.

② Whether there are any unnoticed illnesses

Abnormalities can be detected not only through specimen tests (blood and urine tests) but also through physiological tests (electrocardiograms, ultrasounds, pulmonary function tests, etc.).

3) Disease prevention and health management

Health checkups and regular examinations once every six months to once a year allow you to identify your risk of lifestyle-related diseases, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, etc. early on and take measures to prevent them.

What can the main tests tell us and what can't we know?

The main thing that can be determined through tests is whether or not there are any abnormalities, which can be read from the numbers.

We check for abnormalities by establishing reference standards based on statistical standard values, guidelines established by academic societies, and the latest research results. CT or MRI may be required to determine the cause of pain, lesions, and structural abnormalities of organs.

Typical tests
What you will learn
<Specimen testing> Blood tests and urine tests Various organ functions, glucose metabolism, lipid abnormalities, presence or absence of anemia, etc.
<Ultrasound examination> Echo examination Organ morphology, blood flow, presence or absence of tumors, etc.
<Cardiovascular physiological examination> Electrocardiogram, blood pressure, etc. Heart rhythm disturbances, ischemic findings, blood pressure, degree of arteriosclerosis, etc.
<Respiratory physiological tests> Pulmonary function tests, etc. Lung capacity, degree of airway narrowing, gas exchange capacity, etc.
<Neurophysiological tests> EEG, electromyogram, etc. Abnormalities in electrical activity of the brain, nerve and muscle excitation conduction, etc.

Can I get tested at any time?

Kitano Hospital performs approximately 5.3 million tests per year.

As a general rule, we accept patients between 8:15am and 4:30pm on weekdays, but we are committed to providing rapid testing 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and operate a two-shift system to handle urgent tests and blood transfusions at all times.
In addition, as we are advancing the use of IT, doctors and nurses can view results, not only of specimen tests but also of physiological test reports and images, on electronic medical record terminals from anywhere in the hospital.

Equipment Maintenance

Regular maintenance of clinical testing equipment is essential for accurate diagnosis and treatment. Without proper maintenance, there is a risk of incorrect test results, which could affect patient treatment.
Of course, the equipment itself is regularly maintained by the equipment manufacturer and engineers, but daily inspections are also carried out to check for any deviations in testing accuracy, the presence of dust or dirt, and the replenishment of reagents.

<Notice from the Clinical Laboratory Department>

In order to reduce waiting times for tests and answer patient questions, the Clinical Laboratory Department utilizes AI and ICT to provide a variety of services, such as displaying waiting times and AI-based chat support. Please feel free to take advantage of these services.

How long does a blood test take?

Depending on how busy it is on the day of your appointment, blood collection usually takes 5 to 10 minutes.
Blood test results are often available on the same day, but if specific items or additional tests are required, it may take one to several days.

Waiting times for blood collection can now be checked on smartphones

In order to help patients make the most of their waiting time in the hospital, we have implemented a system called "Waiting time for blood collection" is now available to watch on YouTube.
