Kitano Hospital's Gender Equality Committee was established in 2006 as the Female Physician Support Committee, and was further developed into the Gender Equality Committee in 2007, marking its 14th year this year.

Our hospital was one of the first in the country to start an in-house sick child care service, and began supporting working female doctors. Initially, it was limited to doctors, but now it is available to all staff. In addition to female staff, the number of male doctors and staff using the service is also increasing. Plans are underway to relocate the in-house nursery and sick child care center and renovate them with more comprehensive facilities. We also continue to implement measures such as surveys on the ease of working for staff, a part-time full-time employee system, and a night-time child care system.

In 2017, we were able to receive our third update in the "Best Hospital to Work For" rating. Through this review, we were able to identify areas for improvement to make our hospital an even better place to work. We will continue to gather feedback from various departments within the hospital, including not only doctors and nurses, but also pharmacists, laboratory technicians, radiologists, clinical engineers, the rehabilitation department, and the administrative department.

The Gender Equality Committee will continue its activities so that each and every employee can maintain a professional mindset, find a work-life balance in various ways, and continue to work with a sense of fulfillment, regardless of gender. We appreciate your continued support.

Doctor (female)

I work as a nephrologist while raising two elementary school children (ages 11 and 6). As my children grow, my role as a parent changes, and I realize that my job content and responsibilities increase with the years I spend as a doctor. This year in particular, with school closures and a strained medical system due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I have been adapting my work-life balance daily. Even in these unusual circumstances, I would like to continue working as part of this committee to create a workplace where each employee, from a variety of backgrounds, can work enthusiastically and comfortably.

Doctor (female)

Starting this year, I will be participating in the Gender Equality Committee. I work as an obstetrician-gynecologist while raising two children, ages 2 and 5. I believe it is very important to create a workplace where people can continue working while raising children or caring for the elderly. I would also like to work towards creating a workplace that is comfortable for all employees, both men and women, including those who are not raising children. Thank you for your cooperation.

Doctor (male)

I have been participating in the Gender Equality Committee since this year. Having returned from studying abroad with my children, I have come to realize that balancing work, family, and child-rearing is a universal issue, not just in Japan. While the number of men taking parental leave is gradually increasing, there are still challenges, such as the difficulty of taking long leave, which is unique to Japan. As career visions become more diverse, I hope to contribute to creating a workplace where people can work in a way that suits their individual needs.

Nurse (female)

As diversifying working styles are promoted, I would like to work hard as a committee member to create a work environment where each employee can maintain the lifestyle they desire, pursue the career they aspire to, and continue working with a sense of fulfillment.

Nurse (female)

I have previously served as a committee member, and this is my second time serving this year. I have finished raising my children, but I am currently working in the outpatient department, and many of our staff are in the midst of raising children. I would like to work to create a comfortable working environment so that our staff can continue to work with peace of mind. Thank you for your support.

Clinical laboratory technician (female)

We would like to create an environment where all employees can work comfortably by introducing many systems that can be used by employees of various positions, not just those raising children, and by sharing the voices of those who use these systems.

Radiological technologist (female)

This is my fourth year participating in the committee. I still have a lot to learn, but I hope to be of some help to the staff and contribute to creating a comfortable working environment. Thank you for your support.

Clinical engineer (female)

This is my second year participating in the committee. I am currently raising three children and balancing work and family life is difficult, but I am able to work as a full-time employee while using daycare and sick child care. I hope to be able to work in a way that helps people achieve the work-life balance they desire in various family situations, including childcare and nursing care. I look forward to your continued support this year.

Registered dietitian (female)

I have been participating as a committee member since fiscal year 2017. With the trend toward nuclear families, work-life balance has become more diverse, with child-rearing, nursing care, careers, and more, and I feel that there are many challenges these days. Furthermore, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, I believe that the next challenge is to create a new system to address the new needs that will arise in terms of "new lifestyle habits" and "workstyle" support for medical professionals. Although my contribution may be small, I would like to work to build a win-win relationship between the workplace and staff. Thank you for your cooperation.
