Cancer diagnosis and treatment efficacy assessment

The PET-CT system being introduced is equipped with a new detector. This detector has a 26cm field of view in the body axis direction and achieves overwhelmingly higher sensitivity than previous models. In addition, the latest PET image reconstruction function simultaneously achieves improvements in both image quality and quantitative accuracy, which were difficult with previous methods. This will improve the ability to visualize minute lesions, distinguish adjacent lesions, and improve image quality in organs with high noise, such as the liver, thereby improving diagnostic capabilities in cancer treatment.

PET-CT scans have proven effective in cancer screening, staging, and recurrence diagnosis, but recently their usefulness in assessing treatment efficacy has been attracting attention. PET-CT scans allow for biochemical image evaluation of cancer cell activity, making it possible to confirm treatment efficacy earlier than morphological tests such as MRI and CT. The new PET/CT device to be installed at Kitano Hospital will dramatically improve the reliability and stability of the SUV values used to assess treatment efficacy, enabling more objective verification of treatment efficacy and prompt decisions to switch to new treatments.

What is a PET scan?

PET scanning is a testing method that captures cross-sectional images (horizontal and vertical slices) of the brain, organs, and other organs, including cancer, to accurately diagnose the cause and condition of illness.
It is extremely useful for detecting brain diseases, early-stage cancer, and metastatic cancer, as well as for monitoring the progress of treatment.

With a PET/CT system, the PET and CT scans are performed on the same bed.The greatest advantage of this system is that if an abnormality is found during the PET scan, the exact location can be determined using CT images.
In addition, the latest technology has made it possible to reduce radiation exposure from CT scans to about half of what it was previously.

Furthermore, by capturing images while monitoring chest and abdominal movements caused by breathing and then segmenting the images, it is possible to create animated, moving images that can aid in more accurate diagnoses.
