What is a green light laser?

Green laser treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia is a new surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia that puts less strain on the body.

In October 2016, our urology department introduced the latest surgical device, the AMG GreenLight HPS, which uses a green light laser, for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Conventionally, surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia was performed by using an endoscope inserted through the urethra to remove the prostate with an electric scalpel. However, this procedure resulted in significant bleeding during and after surgery, making it somewhat of a burden for elderly patients. Treatment with the green light laser significantly reduces the risk of these complications and allows for a faster postoperative recovery.

Green Light Laser Features

Feature 1: Transurethral surgery using "vaporization"

The surgery is performed using an endoscope and a small optical fiber inserted through the urethra. When a high-power green light laser is irradiated onto the prostate from the optical fiber, the prostate tissue is instantly vaporized (evaporated) and at the same time a coagulated layer that is less likely to bleed is formed. This procedure is repeated to ensure space within the prostate for urine to flow.

Feature 2: Reduction of complications

Compared to traditional excision treatments, green light laser vaporization has been shown to result in fewer complications, such as postoperative bleeding, blood transfusions, and urethral strictures (narrowing).

Feature 3: Rapid post-operative recovery

Because there is less bleeding, the period during which a tube (catheter) is left in the urethra after surgery will be shorter (1 to 2 days), and it is expected that the length of hospital stay will also be shorter.

Feature 4: Good surgical results

In most patients, urinary status improves immediately after surgery. The treatment effect is equivalent to that of conventional excision surgery, and good results are maintained for more than five years.

良好な手術効果

Vaporization surgery using a green light laser is less invasive and offers the opportunity for patients who have had difficulty undergoing conventional surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia. Please feel free to contact us for a consultation.
