We have begun treatment with Xofigo® Intravenous Injection (generic name: radium-223 chloride) for castration-resistant prostate cancer with bone metastasis.

Xofigo is a new type of radiopharmaceutical that is the first in the world to use radiation called alpha particles (α-particles) to have a therapeutic effect on cancer cells that have metastasized to the bones.
Our hospital began treatment with Xofigo in September 2016, and we expect this to extend survival times and the time until symptoms such as pain and fractures due to bone metastasis appear.

Prostate Cancer Treatment

In most cases, early-stage prostate cancer is treated with surgery or radiation therapy. Advanced prostate cancer is treated with endocrine therapy, which involves testicular removal or a combination of injectable and oral medications with similar effects. The effectiveness of endocrine therapy often weakens after several years, and the disease often worsens. This condition is called castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC).
Traditionally, CRPC has been treated with intravenous or oral anticancer drugs, but a new treatment has been added: an injectable radioisotope called Xofigo.

Characteristics and effects of Xofigo

Radium-223, a component of Xofigo, has properties similar to calcium and is absorbed into the bones when injected. Taking advantage of this property, it has come to be used as a treatment for bone metastasis. The radiation emitted by Xofigo is called alpha rays, which are high in energy and have the power to destroy cancer cells. However, the range of alpha rays within the body is short, less than 0.1 mm, so they have the advantage of having relatively little effect on normal cells.
Xofigo is administered six times, four weeks apart. It is ordered according to each patient's treatment schedule. As the drug has a very short shelf life, the injection date cannot be changed as a general rule.
Xofigo is a treatment that can be expected to extend survival time. It is also expected to improve quality of life, and is used as the first-line drug for CRPC with bone metastasis in Europe. We started treatment with Xofigo at our hospital in September 2016.

*In addition to the self-pay portion of insurance-covered medical treatment, you will also be required to pay a selected medical treatment fee of 8,640 yen.

The Suzuran Club is a group for graduates of our hospital's NICU.
For children who have been discharged from the NICU, discharge is not a goal but the start of a new life, so the event is held with the aim of supporting families by providing a place for interaction between children and their families.
Another goal is to provide support to families of children currently hospitalized by learning about the concerns that families are facing.

It is held once a year, and this year marks the 7th time.
The event is aimed at children who have been hospitalized in our NICU for more than a month and their families. While the main focus is on providing a place for interaction, we also plan programs such as mini lectures and recreational activities to ensure that children and their families can spend a meaningful time together.

Last year, 20 pairs of children and their families participated, and the families commented, "It was great to be able to talk with other mothers," "It was very meaningful to meet and talk with the mothers and children who spent time with me in the NICU," and "It was good to meet the NICU nurses for the first time in a while and have them see how my child has grown."
As a memento, we give each participating family a message card with a group photo.

Please come and visit with your children who have graduated from Kitano Hospital's NICU and are now all grown up.

"Nursing Day" was born out of a strong desire to ensure that all citizens share the spirit of nursing and caring equally, and to foster this spirit especially in children who will be responsible for the aging society of the 21st century.
If the spirit of nursing, caring and mutual support is nurtured in homes, communities and workplaces, we will be able to prevent illness and cure it while it is still in its early stages, and those who do succumb to unavoidable illness will be able to receive an abundant supply of warm comfort right up until the end.
At Kitano Hospital, we hold "Nursing Day" every year to showcase the "power of nursing" that supports our patients. We have prepared some fun events, so please feel free to come along.

We will be giving away wonderful Kitano merchandise to all who participate!

Our hospital introduced the surgical robot "Da Vinci Surgical System" in April 2013 and has been conducting training on how to operate it.
In June 2013, the Urology Department at our hospital began performing prostate cancer surgery using the Da Vinci system.
(*As of April 1, 2012, only prostate cancer surgery is covered by insurance.)

<What is the Da Vinci Surgical System?>
The da Vinci Surgical System, also known as the da Vinci, is a master-slave type medical robot for endoscopic surgery developed by Intuitive Surgical, Inc., USA. It is a representative endoscopic surgical robot and enables minimally invasive surgery for patients. The system consists of a surgeon console, patient cart, vision cart, etc.
An endoscopic camera and robotic arm are inserted through a small incision of 1-2 cm, enabling advanced endoscopic surgery. The surgeon performs surgery by operating the robotic arm while viewing the 3D monitor screen, as if they were actually inserting their hands into the surgical field.

Greetings

My name is Kumiko Oseto, a certified genetic counselor who has been in charge of genetic counseling at Kitano Hospital since January 2013.
I mainly provide counseling for familial tumors. Please contact me if you have any concerns about cancer inheritance, such as a "cancer family history."

What is familial tumor?

The term "cancer family" is generally used when a family has a wide variety of cancers, but the official term, familial tumors, refers to a family with a high incidence of certain cancers or a tendency to develop cancer at a young age. Genetic testing has recently become available, revealing that 5-10% of cancers are hereditary, with breast cancer caused by abnormalities in the BRCA gene reaching 26%. People with genetic abnormalities are at a higher risk of developing cancer from birth, and those with BRCA abnormalities are at risk of developing breast cancer with 50%-80%, and 10%-30% of those with BRCA abnormalities are at risk of developing ovarian cancer.

The pros and cons of knowing this

There is no revolutionary method to prevent cancer. However, we have learned that if you start checkups at a young age, detect cancer early, and receive early treatment, the treatment outcomes are no different from those of other cancers. Genetic testing has been introduced as one method for early detection. However, genetic information is so important that it is said to be the most personal information, and it is important information that cannot be changed from birth to death. Therefore, it is important to fully understand the advantages and disadvantages of testing. We understand that there may be some topics that are difficult to discuss, but we will respect your privacy and carefully manage your personal information. If you think that cancer may be in your family, please contact us.

If you would like to consult

Please inform the reception desk of the Breast Surgery Outpatient Department (Block B).
