In a joint study with a research group at the Center for Cancer Immunology, Graduate School of Medicine, Kyoto University, and the Center for Sports Medicine, School of Medicine, Keio University, Medical Institute Kitano Hospital discovered that when ferroptosis, which causes various diseases including liver diseases, progresses, a special substance known as an "iron odor molecule" is released as a gas from cells.
Until now, studying ferroptosis required physically demanding tests such as removing part of the liver, but this study suggests that it may be possible to determine the progression of the disease simply by examining the breath of patients with fatty liver disease.
