Large-scale disaster response drill conducted in preparation for a Nankai Trough earthquake

Previous training session

The Medical Research Institute Kitano Hospital, a public interest incorporated foundation run by the Tatsuno Kofukai Foundation, will be conducting a large-scale disaster response drill on Sunday, October 6, 2024, simulating a Nankai Trough earthquake, in order to contribute to the local community by fulfilling its role as a medical facility with disaster response capabilities in the event of an emergency.

Background and purpose of the training

Our hospital is located in the heart of Kita-ku, Osaka City, with the Yodo River to the north and many large buildings such as buildings and apartments nearby, so in the unlikely event of a major earthquake, we as a medical facility would be required to respond in a variety of ways. For this reason, our hospital has been conducting large-scale disaster response drills since 2013, and as there have been particularly many disasters this year, we have decided to conduct a large-scale disaster response drill as a medical facility in Kita-ku, Osaka City with disaster response capabilities, with the aim of "creating an organization that can contribute to the community."

For this training, we have also received cooperation from Yukioka Medical Technology College (Kita-ku, Osaka; Principal: Akihiko Okuyama), an educational corporation of Yukioka Health and Hygiene Academy, located in the same Kita-ku, Osaka city, who will act as "injured or sick people." By giving this experience to not only our hospital staff but also our students, who will be the leaders of the next generation, we hope to work together as a region to improve our disaster response standards.

Additionally, as a new initiative, with the cooperation of Osaka City Kita Ward Office (Ward Mayor: Teramoto Yuzuru) and Osaka City Kita Ward Medical Association (Chairman: Motoide Hajime), the Osaka City Disaster Prevention Information System will be utilized to share information on the status of damage to buildings, lifelines, and traffic, the status of accepting patients, and information on the opening of evacuation shelters, while also conducting communications training in the event of an actual disaster.
