"Teeth regrowth medicine" developed by Dr. Takahashi, a dental and oral surgeon, wins the Age Tech 2021 Award for Excellence

The "tooth regrowth medicine" being researched by Dr. Katsuru Takahashi, Chief of the Department of Dentistry and Oral Surgery at Kitano Hospital, won the Excellence Award (runner-up) at the "Age Tech 2021 Awards" sponsored by the Well-Aging Economic Forum (supported by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science).

Research into this "teething medicine" is currently being conducted jointly at our hospital's Medical Research Institute, primarily with Tregem Biopharma Co., Ltd., a venture company spun off from Kyoto University, of which Dr. Takahashi is a co-founder.

Kitano Hospital would like to continue contributing to the development of medicine through supporting various research projects, including this one.

This initiative began when Professor Masaru Takahashi of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine came across a mouse model of supernumerary teeth in 2007. This scientific technology has been developed with support from AMED (Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development) and venture capital from Kyoto University.

This is a completely new treatment method that regenerates teeth by stopping the function that causes the buds of the third teeth (the teeth after the permanent teeth) that humans naturally have to degenerate and disappear, and allowing them to grow as third teeth.

The key to its success is the expectation that a breakthrough in Japanese science and technology will occur, something that everyone has longed for but has not been able to achieve until now, and the impact it will have when it is realized. The goal is to put it into practical use and bring it to market in 2030.
