For eardrums that have holes and do not close naturallyEardrum regeneration therapyHowever, it was covered by insurance last year.
This is the world's first regenerative therapy, developed primarily by Dr. Shinichi Kanamaru, director of our hospital's Hearing Loss and Tympanic Membrane Regeneration Center and head of the Otolaryngology Department.
The conventional treatment for a perforated eardrum has been to make an incision behind the ear, harvest fascia, and attach it as a replacement for the eardrum. However, this treatment requires surgery, which places a significant burden on the patient, and has the disadvantage of being less likely to improve hearing.
The newly developed eardrum regeneration therapy can generally be completed in an outpatient clinic (in about 20 minutes), and is also expected to improve hearing.
Since the press conference held at our hospital at the end of last year, this treatment has been covered by many media outlets, and Dr. Kanamaru recently appeared on NHK Educational TV's "Today's Health" to talk about it.
Dr. Kanamaru provides detailed explanations so that the general public can easily understand. There will be a rebroadcast on November 18th, so if you missed it, be sure to watch it.
