This system was established as a result of amendments to the Medical Care Act, with the aim of dividing up functions among medical facilities according to their size and characteristics. By having patients receive initial medical treatment at local clinics and medical centers, and providing advanced and specialized medical care at larger hospitals, the system aims to streamline medical care by making effective use of limited medical resources and easing congestion at large hospitals.
A family doctor is a doctor that you can go to immediately when you feel unwell and consult about your health. By seeing patients on a regular basis, doctors can quickly notice any small changes and decide that it would be better to have the patient examined and treated at a hospital with more advanced medical equipment and specialists.
A family doctor who can be consulted immediately when something happens is a reassuring presence for patients.
This is a letter from the doctor in charge to the doctor in charge of the referring medical institution, detailing the patient's symptoms, medical history, test results, etc. Officially, it is called a medical information report, or a referral letter.
This form is created when requesting more advanced medical care or specialized tests, or when wishing to be transferred to another medical institution.
Each letter is worth 250 points (750 points if data etc. are attached at the time of discharge), and 750 yen for those who pay 30% of the cost.
