On April 7th, 2004, The first pancreatic islet transplantation from a cadaver donor in Japan was performed in Department of Transplantation Surgery, Kyoto University. The recipient was successfully withdrawn from insulin therapy. At the present time, the indications for pancreatic islet transplantation are considered to be type 1 diabetes, which is totally devoid of insulin secretion from the pancreas, or pancreatic diabetes, which occurs after total pancreatectomy, who represent with asymptomatic hypoglycemia causing consciousness loss or frequent hypoglycemic episodes even with multiple injections of insulin. Pancreatic islet transplantation is classified into two, one from the donor of cardiac arrest or brain death, and the other from the family member as a donor.
The result of pancreatic islet transplantation had been poor with the rate of insulin withdrawal only around 10% one year after the transplantation until 2000 when the group of Albert University of Canada reported all of the seven recipients could successfully withdrawn from insulin therapy for 4-15 months. After this Edmonton Protocol has been established, the result of transplantation has been very good, and the result of transplantation by Kyoto University group beginning in 2004 is also good at the present time. However, there are some limitations such as the fact that immunosuppressants should be administered or that those who suffer from severe diabetic retinopathy or diabetic nephropathy could not be recipients. In addition, there are some questions to be answered, such as how long and how much the transplanted pancreatic islet could function normally, since this technique is only 5-6 years old.
In Kyoto University, the Department of Transplant Surgery is responsible for the operation, and the Department of Diabetes & Clinical Nutrition is determining the indication and evaluating the preoperative conditions. The Center for Diabetes & Endocrinology of Medical Institute KITANO Hospital is in cooperation with the Department of Diabetes & Clinical Nutrition, and can evaluate the condition of patients and register for the transplantation as soon as possible.
The research is ongoing in order to make use of the artificially regenerated pancreatic islet with tissue engineering techniques. Our Institute is also continuing to perform the research for pancreatic islet regeneration (very recently, it has been admitted that the Young Investigator Grant be given to our research from the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Labor of Japan).

FOR FOREIGN PATIENTS LIVING IN JAPAN WHO WOULD WISH TO VISIT OUR CLINIC

If you have any question regarding our service, such as how & when you may ask for our services, please contact the director (Dr Hiroyuki Koshiyama, MDPhD) via telephone.

You can, of course, visit our clinic directly without any previous contact (the on-site reservation is possible).

 ABOUT OUR SPECIAL PRIVATE ROOMS

We have a special ward at 14th floor East, which includes private rooms. The wards are differently arranged from other wards, considering the privacy and comfort of the patients and their family.

We believe that such a special room is appropriate for the foreign executives living in Japan, who would need privacy and apparatus to continuing the work using internet access during admission. Especially for diabetic patients (both type 1 and type 2), we could provide the short stay schedule in order to examine the complications, such as retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy and atherosclerosis, and adjustments of insulin therapy regimen.

The daily cost of them ranges from\30,000 to\100, 000, depending on their apparatus. All of them are equipped with an internet supply, a sink, a telephone, a refrigerator a sofa, and a shower or bath. For their photos and details of equipments, please see the page below (the description is Japanese only, sorry).
