| The Sixth Division of the Kitano Medical Research
Institute studies child health, human reproduction, and developmental
and regeneration medicine. This division is mainly composed
of medical researchers involved with obstetrics and gynecology,
pediatrics, pediatric surgery and plastic surgery. We have
investigated reproductive health including pregnancy, childbirth
and perinatal disorders, child development and congenital
organ disorders and regenerative embryonic stem cell treatments.
Female pelvic floor disorders due to childbirth and ovarian
dysfunction are becoming major problems in aging societies.
Although extractive or placating operations have been the
main conventional therapies, a new technique in which polypropylene
soft mesh is implanted in the pelvic floor was recently developed.
For reconstructive surgery, tissue engineering experiments
using rats were conducted, studying the effects of bone marrow
stromal cells (BMSCs) on the repair of spinal cord injury
and behavioral improvement. The rat recovered from spinal
cord injury through injection of BMSCs. Recovery of motor
activity was higher in the rat that underwent the procedure
than in the control rat. Based on the results, we have made
a protocol for clinical trial of this treatment, and two patients
with acute spinal injury have been treated accordingly. |
